The Fellowship of Books
"Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body." (Joseph Addison)
Welcome to our class blog!
Welcome to our Fellowship of Books! It's my hope that this blog will be a place where we can ask questions, make announcements and share new discoveries. Please visit frequently, as I will be posting information on upcoming assignments and exams. If there is something that you would like to share with everyone else, let me know and I will post it here. Also, if you have any questions about anything we are doing in class (or about any other subject!), leave a comment or send me an email and I will do my best to address it both here and in class.
Remember, this is your class blog... so enjoy!

Happy Homecoming!
I hope everyone has a fun and safe Homecoming Weekend!
This weekend's homework:
“Why Me?” Narrative Essay
Think of a time in your life when you have experienced a “Why Me?” moment (it can be as trivial or as serious as you would like it to be).
This weekend's homework:
“Why Me?” Narrative Essay
Think of a time in your life when you have experienced a “Why Me?” moment (it can be as trivial or as serious as you would like it to be).
- What was the situation? What was the injustice?
- What were you feeling?
- Were you angry with someone? Or at something?
Now think of how you resolved your moment of crisis:
- What did you do that changed your attitude?
- Who helped you resolve the issue?
- What new insights did you learn about yourself? About others? About the world?
Write a narrative essay (a story!) that describes the conflict you experienced and how you ultimately resolved it.
Some guidelines:
- Mimic the style of Tomás Rivera’s short story “And the Earth Did Not Devour Him” (3rd person narrative, some type of dialogue (inner monologues or between characters)).
- Be detailed in your descriptions of people, places, smells, sounds, actions, emotions, etc.
- Come up with a meaningful title for your story.
- Make it about 2 pages.

Please make sure to read the short story "And the Earth Did Not Devour Him."
Tomorrow we will be discussing this story in class, so come prepared to contribute to our conversation.

Owen Meany Socratic Seminar
Great discussion today! Thank you for your participation in asking questions and offering comments and opinions.
We will be having more Socratic Seminars throughout the year - hopefully you all found it to be a valuable experience to better understand A Prayer for Owen Meany.
If you have any suggestions on how we can improve the next seminar, let me know and we will incorporate them next time.
Have a great weekend!
